Software Request

This page contains information on the policies for requesting the installation of software for instructional purposes. Please review the policies pages to make sure you are making appropriate use of software and/or software licenses.

Getting Instructional Software Installed

Overview

The Classroom and Lab Computing Group (CLC) regularly evaluates and installs software packages at faculty request.  This document contains instructions and contact information for requesting instructional software installation. Below, we outline the policies and compatibility issues governing this service.  Additionally, we describe some software considerations that help us provide you high-quality technology resources and services.

These guidelines are designed to facilitate a stable computing environment for the Penn State community. Following these guidelines streamlines courseware installation, providing better and more uniform service for everyone.

Sufficient lead time is the key to successful software installation.

Software Classes, Locations, Installation Processes, and Details

This table lists 3 classes of software we can support, where and when the software can be installed, and what we need from you to install it. View Table 1

Software File Storage

We have a number of resources for storage of data or associated course materials.  This table lists file storage resources available and where you can obtain explicit information about them. CLC believes that these systems will accommodate most instructors’ needs; if not, email to request Macintosh space or to request Windows space. View Table 2

Software Compatibility Issues

While we make every effort to fulfill software installation requests, occasionally we must deny a request based on the software’s incompatibility with our systems, the unsupported privileges it requires, or due to its damaging effects to our production environment. Below, we describe common issues that cause software to be considered incompatible and therefore ineligible for installation.

University Wide Software Programs

There are a number of programs that make free software and limited software licenses available to students, faculty, and staff.  Please consult the Software Sources of the InfoTech page for a full description of the programs and software available.
