Wireless network Maintenance: Paterno/Pattee Library

ENCS will be performing maintenance on the Paterno/Pattee Library wireless network on Wednesday, 9-20-17, during the standard EIT maintenance window. There is an anticipated disruption to the wireless network for 5-10 minutes while the work is being performed, however; the entire maintenance window is reserved. Known Issue Impacting LionPATH

A known issue impacting LionPATH has been brought to the attention of the IT Service Desk. There was a service interruption affecting access starting at 1:11pm, by 1:18pm services were recovering. Staff are working to resolve existing errors.

Access Account authentication service maintenance Sep 19

During the maintenance window on September 19, between 5 to 7 am, Penn State IT staff will perform maintenance on the Kerberos authentication service for Penn State Access Accounts. During this time, users may experience brief delays in authentication.

Voice Services Maintenance Work

Friday September 22 from 11:00 p.m. through Sunday September 24 11:59 p.m., Penn State IT will perform
a system version upgrade to the Voice Application Servers. During this time, users may experience a reset
of their voice endpoint devices.

In addition, Cisco has released a telephone firmware upgrade to enhance security features, improve the visual
display, and provide additional call handling features on the 8811 and 8851 model phones.

The improvement to security will not be visible, but the changes in our user's experience will be noticeable!

* A brighter and lighter display reducing eyestrain and glare
* Colorful icon badging for quick and easy visibility on the Model 8851
* Larger informational windows are displayed for calling information
* Additional font sizing options
* Improved call conferencing management
* Improved procedure for answering secondary line appearances

Update: Unexpected Sites Outage

As of approximately 5:17 p.m. today, the sites service is functioning again. However, there still seems to be an issue with mapped domains.

Enterprise IT staff members are still working with the vendor to fully resolve the issue.

At 12:44 p.m. EST on September 12, a misconfiguration began interfering with access to some Virtual Machines (VMs), including LDAP servers. This resulted in some services being affected, including UMG Manager (umg.its.psu.edu). Penn State IT detected the issue at 12:47 p.m. EST and restored full service at 1:02 p.m.

Sites Certificate Error

As of approximately 10:40 a.m. today, Sites is experiencing an SSL certificate issue across sites.psu.edu. This is causing some sites to be unreachable.

Enterprise IT staff members are working with the vendor to resolve the issue. More information will be shared on the IT Alerts page as it becomes available.

The complexity and potential impact of these changes are significant; simulation and testing should prevent major disruptions, however, some service interruption is expected. In order to mitigate this, teams from Systems Engineering and Data Center Services will work to quickly resolve issues as they are identified during and after the change. Critical services and systems that could be impacted include: WebAccess, Shibboleth, UCS, WebMail/email, TSM, PASS NFS, Wireless, and LDAP.

Password Management link changes on work.psu.edu

On Tuesday, September 12, 2017 from 05:00 a.m. to 07:00 a.m., EI&O support staff will be deploying an update to work.psu.edu to redirect "Change Password" and "Forgot Password" links to a new Password Management site. No outages are expected during this deployment.

Update: Penn State York Voice Services Migration

Friday September 15, 2017 starting at 5:00pm through Sunday September 17, 2017, Penn State IT will be migrating Penn State York Campus voice services from their existing Avaya PBX solution to Cisco Unified Communications Manager. As part of this two day migration, inbound and outbound voice call services will be periodically interrupted.

UCS Scheduled Maintenance

Enterprise IT is planning to update software on the servers that support UCS. This is not a UCS update, it is an update to the operating systems and related code. Users connected to UCS during the update may see an "error unable to connect" message in their mail client while the web interface may become unresponsive for a few minutes. The updates will be performed over three days, 9/12, 9/14 and 9/19 during the normal maintenance window of 5am to 7am. These changes are being tracked as CHG0044016, CHG0044021 and CHG0044022.

Notice of Changes to Data Center Firewall Management (Panorama)

On Tuesday 9/12 , starting at 7 am until Wednesday 9/13 ending at 7 am, a configuration lock must be put on Panorama and the University Park firewalls. If changes within Panorama, the Hershey firewalls or the University Park firewalls are needed, please open an incident against service “Data Center Services” or contact the Operations Center at 865-4662. The operations center will open a ticket on your behalf.

On Tuesday 9/12, starting at 8 pm until Wednesday 9/13 ending at 7 am, the Hershey firewalls will be moved from local management to Panorama management. The remediation process dictates that we must remove a firewall from the HA pair, proceed with the reconfiguration to Panorama management, then bring the firewall back in to service. The process then repeats on the the other firewall. While a firewall is being taken out of and back in to service, a momentary traffic disruption will occur. An outage of up to 5 minutes is possible for some applications depending on their behavior and tolerance for a lost packet in a session. Although the testing process has shown there does not need to be an extended outage, if there is an emergency an outage of up to 60 minutes may be experienced to rebuild the firewalls.

Starting Wednesday 9/13, all Data Center Firewall Management will be done through Panorama. Further information and documentation is still forthcoming. Please see the original post with a summary of the impact to firewall management.

Known Issue impacting TurnItIn

Intermittent Service Disruption Affecting PASS

UCS experienced a partial outage from 1:09pm to 1:23pm due to a hardware failure. Enterprise IT have successfully restored UCS services.
