University Park Data Center Firewall Outage

On 2/27/2017 starting at 3:16PM until roughly 4:05PM one of the Data Center firewalls experienced an event causing the line cards to reload and not fully recover. During this period, the firewall dropped random traffic, causing sporadic issues. The network was stabilized, however it remains in a degraded state.

Friends of Penn State authentication service upgrade March 7, 8

Penn State IT will upgrade the Kerberos authentication service for Friends of Penn State (FPS) accounts on Tuesday, March 7, during the 5-7 a.m. maintenance window. During this time, users will not be able to create new accounts or change passwords. Accounts will be unable to be locked or unlocked, and the Service Desk will be unable to check the lock state of an FPS account. Authentication with existing accounts should continue to work during the upgrade. After the upgrade, users may see faster login times, but will likely not see a big difference.

On Wednesday, March 8, during the 5-7 a.m. maintenance window, the restart scripts will be tested, which may result in a brief outage similar to the previous day, but for only a minute or two.

Web Based Login Degraded Service

An issue impacting web based logins have been brought to the attention of the IT Service Desk. Currently this issue is causing an Internal Server Error for users who are attempting to connect to various services such as Box, Yammer, LionPATH, Canvas, Starfish, etc. We are currently working to resolve this incident as quickly as possible.

Brief wireless (psu) disruption at Pollock hubsite

PASS Upgrade on Saturday, Mar 4

On Saturday, March 4, during an extended maintenance window (8 AM - Noon) OVPIT will upgrade the /pass/services filesystem in PASS. This will upgrade it to the newer features of GPFS 4.1. In order to perform this upgrade, all services that rely upon it will become unavailable during the majority of the maintenance window, 8 AM - Noon. These services include, but are not limited to the following:
- Polaris web hosting (www.psu.edu, news.psu.edu, campus sites, launch.lionpath.psu.edu, etc.); these sites will be served in a read-only state from cache during the maintenance
- www.personal.psu.edu and protected.personal.psu.edu
- www.courses.psu.edu
- www.clubs.psu.edu
- departmental Web hosting and virtual web hosting (www.psu.edu/dept will be served from cache during the maintenance)
- PASS Gateways (SMB/CIFS, NFS, Secure FTP)
- PASS Explorer, explorer.pass.psu.edu
- www.work.psu.edu
- wireless.psu.edu
- php.scripts.psu.edu
- UMG Manager (umg.its.psu.edu)

Penn State Wireless Service IPv4 subnet addition

On March 6, Enterprise Networking and Communication Services (ENCS) will be adding a new subnet, 104.39.128.0/17, to the Penn State Wireless network to expand wireless service capacity throughout Penn State.

As a result, wireless security administrators should update any firewall or security policies to include the new IPv4 subnet on or before March 6 if Penn State Wireless traffic is permitted into the network that is being secured.

Penn State Hershey Router Upgrades

Next Thursday, March 2, during the hours of 9 PM to midnight, ENCS will be upgrading the software on the Brocade MLX UEN routers at Penn State Hershey. The purpose of the software upgrade is to address known software defects affecting performance of the University Enterprise Network. Impacted services below may be affected for Up to 5 minutes.The routers will be rebooted one at a time to finalize the software installation.

This alert will be updated upon approval by the CAB at this coming Thursday review meeting.

Expected Impact: There is minimal expected impact due to the redundancy of the data backbones.

Campus Router Upgrades

Next Wednesday, March 1, during the hours of 5 to 7 AM, ENCS will be upgrading the software on All Brocade MLX UEN routers at all Campuses, except for University Park, Dickinson, and Hershey. The purpose of the software upgrade is to address known software defects affecting performance of the University Enterprise Network. Impacted services below may be affected for up to 5 minutes. The routers will be rebooted one at a time to finalize the software installation.

Expected Impact: Outage for all listed Campus network resources up to 5 minutes.

WebAccess Performance testing during maintenance window of 2/22

During the maintenance window on Wednesday, 2/22 between 0600 and 0700, performance testing will be running against WebAccess QA environment, which could impact new logins to production systems that require WebAccess. There is no change to the configuration (form, fit, or function) of WebAccess itself. Test accounts will be used for the testing and the service will be monitored throughout the test period.

University Park Router Code Upgrade

Next Tuesday, February the 28th, during the hours of 4 to 7 AM ENCS will be upgrading the router code on all of our University Park routers. University Park routers will be rebooted one at a time to finalize the code installation. Each router will take approximately ten minutes to reload. Customers without redundant connections should expect a roughly ten minute service interruption sometime between 4 and 7 AM on the 28th.

This alert will be updated upon approval by the CAB at this coming Thursday review meeting.

Wireless Maintenance: Eduroam SSID

On Monday, 2-27, during the standard maintenance window, there will be a brief disruption for users of the eduroam SSID while the client IP address range is changed. Devices connected to the eduroam SSID during this maintenance should be able to reacquire an IP address following this change; however, for some devices a disconnect/reconnect to the eduroam SSID may be required.

Certain Canvas functions to be unavailable on Wednesday, February 22

A Penn State database server that impacts Canvas will be receiving updates during the scheduled maintenance window on Wednesday, February 22, from 5 a.m. to 7 a.m. ET. Although Canvas will still be available for users, functions highlighted with the Penn State shield on the Canvas Dashboard will be unavailable during this time.

Maximum email size to be increased from 20 MB to 25 MB

The maximum size of an email sent through Penn State’s email system will be increased from 20 MB to at least 26,222,592 bytes as of Feb. 21. The new increase matches the allotment offered by some other email providers and will enable students, faculty and staff members to send much larger emails than before the increase.

Between 3AM and 8AM University Enterprise network at the following Campuses may have been degraded:

Great Valley: School of Graduate Professional Studies
Lehigh Valley

The issue was isolated to a faulty Statewide WAN circuit. The circuit has been taken out of active service and services should no longer be degraded. The Provider is being engaged to isolate the trouble.

www.work.psu.edu HTTP server upgrade

During the maintenance window (5-7am) on Thursday, Feb 16 the HTTP/S server on www.work.psu.edu will be upgraded. It will be unavailable at times during the maintenance window. (SNOW Change: CHG0040570).
