ScholarSphere service interruption, 6/015/2017

There will be an interruption to ScholarSphere during the 5-7 a.m. (EDT) maintenance window on Thursday, June 15th to apply upgrades.

Update: Known Error impacting UCS Contacts

The setting for \"Emailed Contacts\" has been implemented for all users. This setting was enabled for users prior to the upgrade and has now been restored enabled. If you want to disable this setting please do the following:

1. Log into https://ucs.psu.edu
2. Click on the \"Preferences\" tab at the top
3. On the left menu, click on \"Contacts\"
4. Under \"Settings\", uncheck the \"Add new contacts to \"Emailed Contacts\"
5. Click on the Save button on the top right.

The restored setting will not restore any contacts back into your address book. But it will help with auto-complete of previously emailed contacts. We have notified the vendor and are working with them on the issue.

Voice Services Momentary Interruption

order to perform emergency maintenance work due to on going work. Calls in progress will not be interrupted.

Canvas features to be unavailable from 5 a.m. - 7 a.m. on Wednesday, 6/14

Penn State Enterprise IT will be performing Canvas maintenance on Wednesday, 6/14, during the scheduled maintenance window from 5 a.m. to 7 a.m. ET. Users will be still be able to access Canvas but the following features will be unavailable during this time:
 
• Master or Manually Created Course requests
• Bulk Enrollment for Manually Created Courses
• Course Sandbox requests
• Merge Course Manager
• Rosters (PSU People) page
• Auto add of course admins to their course in Canvas (World Campus only)
• Course synchronization allows course material in Evolution (content management system) to appear in and be manipulated from Canvas (World Campus only)
• CopyGroups tool that allows group settings to be copied from one course to another (World Campus only)
• PeerEval student tool to evaluate each other on group projects (World Campus only)

ITS Alert - Recommended Vendor Fixes to IBIS/ISIS

On Thursday, June 22, 2017, Penn State IT will apply vendor recommended
fixes to Integrated Business Information Systems (IBIS) and Integrated
Student Information System (ISIS). During this maintenance period, there
will be an outage of ACOM, BCOM, and CCOM. This will also impact the GI,
FIT, CIDR, and WebIBIS, eISIS and eLion. It is anticipated that this
work will be completed before the end of the maintenance window (7 a.m.).

Penn State Shenango - Unplanned Power Disruption

The Penn State Shenango Campus is experiencing an unplanned power outage. All data and voice services are unavailable at this time. Utility providers are working to resolve the issue. Currently there is no estimated time of restoral.

ucs.psu.edu issue with IMAP Clients

Penn State IT started noticing issues with native IMAP Clients like Thunderbird and Outlook since the upgrade to ucs.psu.edu. Users may see a message of these clients disconnecting from UCS. These clients will automatically reconnect so most users should not notice any issues. Others may see pauses will working with mail. At this time we have not seen any issues with the UCS Web Interface. We are working with the vendor to resolve this issue and will keep users updated periodically through this alert.

Network and power outage

At 10:35 am, Penn State IT posted ITS alert 4632 that multiple services were experiencing outages. At 12:35 pm, services began coming back online. What is know at this point is that the Shields Data Center lost power and the generator failed to provide backup power. Power to Shields has since been restored. OPP and Data Center Engineers are currently on-site investigating the cause. The loss of power in Shields caused network services to shutdown and they did not properly fail over. ENCS initiated a sequence to bring the redundant network services online. ENCS is still on-site and monitoring the situation closely.

Numerous Services Degraded or Unavailable

Starting around 10:35 am, Penn State IT staff have learned of a problem causing multiple services to become either slow or unavailable. Services known to be impacted so far include WebAccess, ANGEL, wikispaces, VM hosting and DIMC. Staff are continuing to investigate the problem.

Panorama Maintenance 6/14/17 5-7 am

ENCS and DCS will be performing maintenance on the Panorama management server for the Data Center Palo Alto firewalls on 6/14/17 between 5-7 am. This maintenance is required to update a certificate used for internal communications between Panorama and the physical firewalls.

To allow adequate time for backups, please refrain from making any changes in Panorama or on the physical firewalls beginning 6/13/17 at Noon until after the maintenance. If changes are made in that time period, they may be lost if restoring from backup is required.

During the maintenance the physical firewalls will continue to operate normally, so no impact to traffic is expected.

NFS PASS Gateway to be moved to a new load balancer - June 13

On Tuesday, June 13, NFS PASS Gateway (nfs.pass.psu.edu, 146.186.18.3) will be migrated to a new load balancer during the regularly scheduled maintenance window (5-7am). NFS PASS Gateway may be unavailable for a few minutes while the migration takes place. Users may have to remount PASS after the move

Voice Services Migration Work

Tuesday night, June 13 beginning at 11:00 p.m. through Wednesday morning June 14 7:00 a.m.,
Penn State IT will perform voice services maintenance work. This scheduled work is required
to move hardware components from University Support Building 2 to the University Park Dater Center
located on Tower Road. During this time, users may experience brief delays with inbound and
outbound voice calls.

These planned moves are part of a project to migrate key core and boarder functions from Tier2
facilities to Tier3 locations improve reliability and uptime of critical IT services.

WebAccess: web software update

On Wednesday, June 14, 2017, during the regularly scheduled maintenance window (5:30 a.m. - 7:00 a.m.), Penn State IT will update the web server software and configuration on the WebAccess servers.

No outages are expected during this work, and the login process should remain the same.

On Thursday, June 8, 2017, from 5:00 A.M. to 5:05 A.M., EI&O support staff will perform maintenance to chat.psu.edu and conference.chat.psu.edu. It is anticipated that those 2 services will not be available for approximately 5 minutes.

ANGEL to be unavailable from 5 a.m. - 6 a.m. ET on Friday, 6/9 and Wednesday, 6/14

Penn State Enterprise IT will be performing ANGEL maintenance on Friday, 6/9 and Wednesday, 6/14 during the scheduled maintenance window from 5 a.m. to 6 a.m. ET on both days. ANGEL will be unavailable during these times. Once maintenance has been completed on each day, users will again be able to access ANGEL.

Resolved: authsmtp.psu.edu authentication issue

Starting at 7:00 on June 7, authsmtp.psu.edu had intermittent issues with authentication. The issue was resolved as of 8:19. The cause was multiple authentication processes running causing a conflict. We are looking into why multiple were started.

DIMC Deployment

Account Activation / QuickID Deployment

On Wednesday, June 7, 2017 from 06:00 a.m. to 07:00 a.m., EI&O support staff will be deploying an update to the Account Services application and other supporting services. No outages are expected during this deployment.
