Penn State Enterprise IT will be installing Microsoft Windows system updates (patching) on Wednesday, 7/26 from 5 a.m. to 6 a.m. ET that will require ANGEL to be unavailable during this time. Once patching has been completed, users will again be able to access ANGEL.

Update: Known Error impacting Yammer: Investigation Underway

It appears that all of Yammer may be 100% inaccessible and those currently logged in may not be able to access Yammer. We are still working with Microsoft on a resolution and will update this alert as we receive further information.

WebAccess performance testing 7/18

During the maintenance window (specifically, 05:15 a.m. - 06:30 a.m.) on Tuesday, July 18, 2017, performance testing of the WebAccess service will be done. Response time for logins and protected websites may be slow at times during the testing.

University Enterprise Network Border Router Maintenance

On Thursday July 20th ENCS will be migrating one of the University Border routers to the Tower Road DataCenter starting at 4:30AM. At 4:30AM there may be intermittent internet access for up to 90 Seconds. BigTen Network - A2LS Connection will be unavailable for a longer period of time and will be restored by 8 AM.

The entire Maintenance window is reserved. Work is expected to be complete by 8 AM.

Intermittent Data Center Network Issues

Currently systems on the Data Center Network are experiencing intermittent network issues. Staff are working to diagnose the issue.

University Collaboration Suite (UCS) Server Maintenance - July 12, 2017

On Wednesday, July 12, during the regularly scheduled maintenance window (5:00 - 7:00 a.m.), Penn State IT will perform University Collaboration Suite (UCS) server maintenance. During the brief period the work is being performed, users may experience a partial outage. No email will be lost. Email will be queued during the partial outage and delivered once service has been restored.

As a result, some users may not be able to reach the web interface ( ) for a few minutes while the work is being performed. Clients, such as Thunderbird or Mac Mail, may not be able to receive email during that time, but should be able to send email. Lastly, some Outlook users may not be able to send or receive emails for a brief period.

WebAccess: server changes

Audience: This alert is primarily for administrators of Cosign-protected websites.

During the maintenance windows (05:00 a.m. - 07:00 a.m.) on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, July 11-13, 2017, the WebAccess servers that provide will be moved to new systems. (This alert will be updated with the status of each day's work.)

This is being done over three days to minimize the potential loss of WebAccess login sessions. No downtimes are expected during the work, and no changes are needed on protected websites.

Penn State Access Account authentication service upgrade July 25

Penn State IT will upgrade the Kerberos authentication service for Penn State Access Accounts on Tuesday, July 25, during the 5-7 a.m. maintenance window. During this time, users will not be able to change or reset passwords, nor create new accounts via QuickID. Accounts will be unable to be locked or unlocked, and the Service Desk will be unable to check the lock state of an Access Account. Authentication with existing accounts should continue to work during the upgrade. After the upgrade, users may see faster login times, but will likely not see a big difference.

On Wednesday, July 26, during the 5-7 a.m. maintenance window, the restart scripts will be tested, which may result in a brief outage similar to the previous day, but for only a minute or two.

Change to NFS connections to PASS July 11

Starting July 11, 2017 users who connect to their Penn State Access Account Storage Space (PASS) through the Network File System (NFS) gateway while off campus will need to install and use the VPN "AnyConnect" client application prior to using NFS. This change is an added security measure for those accessing resources on the PASS via NFS from outside the Penn State campus.

Tuition Calculator Maintenance

The tuition calculator service and UI will be updated to correct an issue with the Great Valley campus calculations. The service will be available during the update, but some users may experience an interpution.

Pinnacle Upgrade on Friday, July 14

On Friday, July 14th, 2017 at 4:00 PM, Penn State IT will begin work with the vendor to perform an upgrade for Penn State’s Pinnacle instance (a telecommunications management and billing product). This upgrade includes database and software changes and will be performed over the weekend to minimize impact during business hours. During this upgrade, the Pinnacle application will be unavailable. It is expected that this work will be completed prior to business hours on Monday, July 17th, 2017 at 8:00 AM.

Central Person Registry Database Server Update

On Wednesday, July 5, 2017, during the 5 am - 7 am maintenance window, the web hosting service will be temporarily unavailable for about 1 minute as servers will be moved to newer network hardware. This will affect service to all web sites on as well as all "native PHP" virtual web hosts that are ran from the servers. No functional difference to the web sites is expected with this change.

Voice Services Maintenance Work

Update: Penn State Wireless Service IPv4 subnet expansion taking place July 10

On July 10, Enterprise Networking and Communication Services (ENCS) will be expanding the Penn State Wireless network subnet to in order to increase wireless service capacity throughout Penn State.

As a result, wireless security administrators should update any firewall or security policies to include the new IPv4 subnet on or before July 10 if Penn State Wireless traffic is permitted into the network that is being secured.

Wireless controller software upgrade

During the standard ENCS maintenance window on Wednesday 07/05/17, wireless controllers will be rebooted to complete a software upgrade. While controllers are reloading, the wireless service will be unavailable to all users for roughly 30 minutes. Wireless service is expected to be restored before 7:00 AM. TSM Self-Service Portal upgrade

The TSM Administrators will be installing an upgraded version of the
TSM Self-Service Portal ( on Monday, July 3rd, 2017
from 2:00 - 2:30 p.m. The new version includes minor bug fixes and
feature enhancements.

During the upgrade, the TSM Self-Service Portal will be temporarily
unavailable to users. The upgrade will not affect the rest of the TSM
service, and there will be no impact to backups or restores.

Data Center Firewall maintenance July 11, 5-7 am

During the 5-7 am maintenance window on Tuesday, July 11, ENCS and DCS will be performing maintenance on the Data Center Firewalls in Tower Rd and Computer buildings. This maintenance is being performed to re-enable jumbo frame capabilities which had been erroneously turned off during troubleshooting in a previous network event.

Panorama will be available throughout the maintenance, but please do not make any changes to rule sets during the July 11 maintenance window as those changes may not properly synchronize and cause complications.

Although every precaution will be taken to minimize impact to traffic flows during the maintenance, each firewall will need to be individually taken out of service, need configuration changed, need to be rebooted and need to be brought back in to service. As the firewalls are taken out of and in to service, there may be up to four individual disruptions of up to 35 seconds as the network re-converges. These outages will be spread across the maintenance window. Please monitor your applications and services to ensure that functionality is maintained or if corrective action is needed.
