Penn State Behrend Voice Service Migration

Beginning Monday, May 8, 2017 through Thursday June 1, 2017. OVPIT will be migrating Penn State Behrend Campus voice services from their existing Avaya PBX solution to Cisco Unified Communications Manager. As part of this four week migration, inbound and outbound voice call services will be periodically interrupted.

Service may be affected starting on May 8, 2017 starting at 8:00AM. The estimated time of resolution is June 1, 2017 at 11:00PM.

University Collaboration Suite (UCS) Server Maintenance - April 25

On Tuesday, April 25, during the regularly scheduled maintenance window (5:00 - 7:00 a.m.), Penn State IT will perform University Collaboration Suite (UCS) server maintenance. While work is being performed, there will be a partial outage.

Approximately 7% of users will experience the outage. At least a twenty minute outage is expected while the work is being completed.
Emails will be queued during the partial outage and delivered once service has been restored.

Voice Service Maintenance Work

Friday night April 28th beginning at 11:00PM through Saturday morning April 29th 7:00AM, Penn State IT will be adding new servers for the VoIP system that processes inbound and outbound voice calls. During this time, short periods of service degradation are expected while the work is being completed. Users may see their phones reset as part of the process.


ANGEL to be unavailable from 5 a.m. - 6 a.m. ET on Wednesday, 4/26

Penn State Information Technology will be installing Microsoft Windows system updates (patching) on Wednesday, 4/26 from 5 a.m. to 6 a.m. ET that will require ANGEL to be unavailable during this time. Once patching has been completed, users will again be able to access ANGEL.

Resolved: PASS NFS Gateway degraded

One of the backend servers for the PASS NFS Gateway stopped functioning. Users that were connected to it would have seen an issue from 1:01 PM. Services were restarted on the backend server at 1:39 and the PASS NFS Gateway is functioning normally since the restart.

Canvas login temporarily moving off WebAccess starting April 20

Canvas login will temporarily switch from WebAccess to an alternative authentication method beginning Thursday, April 20. This change is being done to ensure Canvas is available while Instructure implements planned updates that could interfere with the WebAccess authentication process.

The switch from WebAccess will occur during the maintenance window between 5 and 7 a.m. (ET) Thursday, April 20. Users will see a different login screen but will be directed to their Canvas dashboard after entering their userID and password.

Although Penn State IT will be monitoring Instructure’s updates and working to lessen the impact to users, Friends of Penn State (FPS) account holders may be unable to log in to Canvas when Instructure begins implementation at noon ET on Friday, April 21. If FPS accounts are impacted, corrective action will be taken immediately by Penn State IT to resolve any authentication issues.

Please note that switching to an alternative authentication means that Canvas will not be part of the single sign-on services during this time. As a result, users will be prompted to login again when moving between Canvas and other online Penn State services.

Two-factor authentication will not be available for Canvas until the login returns to WebAccess during the 5 to 7 a.m. (ET) maintenance window on Tuesday, April 25.

Starting yesterday one of the backend servers for started experiencing intermittent issues. Some users were able to successfully login, while others were not. The server was restarted today at 10:45 and things seem to be functioning normally now.

Update: IBM Tivoli Storage Manager (TSM) 6.3 to reach End of Support

Users of the TSM service should be aware that IBM Tivoli Storage Manager (TSM) 6.3 will reach End of Support on April 30, 2017.

In addition, IBM TSM 6.4 will reach End of Support on September 30, 2017.

Planned power outage: Penn State Lehigh Valley

The Operations Center has been informed of a planned power outage for Penn State Lehigh Valley due to a new generator test starting today. Networking and voice services will be affected for approximately four hours. Please reference CHG0041536 for more information.

Willard Hub Site Electrical Upgrade

ENCS will be replacing the Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) system that serves the Willard HUB site on Tuesday April 11th, 2017, starting at 5AM with work expected to be completed by 5PM.

In order to perform this work, all equipment at the Willard HUB site will only be supplied by NORMAL building power. This power source will not have the benefit of backup protection from a generator or a UPS. We anticipate the transfer and operation of the equipment on the NORMAL power source to NOT be service affecting and users will not see any outage.

In the event of an unplanned power event on campus to the Willard electrical feed, ECNS services would go offline for the duration of the electrical outage or until we would be able to complete the upgrade and transfer back to UPS / Emergency Power.

Services that have the potential to be affected include:
-Willard Layer 2 and 3 Network connections that are not redundant.

- VoIP, Wireless, and Backbone services in the following buildings are subject to this alert:

eSteward (estewrd-sql-f01) Failover Database Server Relocation to Tower Road

On Tuesday April 11th, the eSteward (estewrd-sql-f01) failover database server will be unavailable due to extended maintenance activities. No production impact is anticipated. However, in the unlikely event of a severe issue with the primary database server, an extended outage would be required until the scheduled maintenance activity is completed, or the primary server can be recovered.

TSM Server Upgrade of Scheduled for April 12, 2017

An upgrade will be installed on the TSM server from 1:00 - 4:30 p.m. (13:00 - 16:30) on Wednesday, April 12, 2017. The work will upgrade the TSM server software to a new version (7.1.7) with improvements, bug-fixes, and ongoing vendor support.

All currently-supported client versions will continue to be compatible with the new server version.

The work is being performed during a period of low activity to limit service degradation for users. During this time, will not be available for backing up or restoring files. The other TSM servers will not be affected by this upgrade.
