Create Mac OS X System Images

To create Mac OS X system disk images, it's strongly recommended that you boot from another disk that is running the same version of OS X that is installed on your "golden" Mac to image. For Example: If your "golden" Mac has 10.9.4 installed, boot from another volume that also has 10.9.4 installed to run Disk Utility from. Booting from another volume also ensures that there are no open files on the "golden" Mac's system.
