Windows XP Conversion -- Known Problems
Please report problems not listed here via the problem report form.
Open Problems
Problems we already know about and are working on:
Adobe Acrobat PDFMaker not functioning
- 9/18/2002 The Adobe PDFMaker macro in Word and Adobe Distiller printer are not functioning. This is a CLC installation problem related to not being able to create a PDF port for the printer.
- 9/18/2002 To create PDF files, create a PostScript file (print to a file using the default printer) and then use Acrobat Distiller.
Eudora Won't Launch
- 06/03/2002 Eudora won't launch if your Home Folder is set to be your Profile; ok for U-drive and PASS. Error message is "Cannot start Eudora the first time with attachments."
Background Desktop
- 05/01/2002 User's background desktop in roaming profile is remembered but not displayed.
- 05/09/2002 Microsoft needs to be contacted.
Closed Problems
Here are past problems that have been fixed.
Change Password, Error Code 2245
- 7/16/2002 The ChangePassword program (desktop icon) will result in "error code 2245" if the new password is the same as the old password. The program will be changed to either not accept the same password as the new one, or give a more informative error message. There is no utility in changing your password to the same thing. Usually.
Not All Software Installed
- 9/18/2002 All of the lab packages (not all CourseWare packages) except ArcGis and Compaq Fortran have been installed.
- 6/26/2002 Not all the software packages installed on Windows 2000 machines are available yet on the XP systems. If you don't find something you need, please go to a lab that still has Windows 2000 machines; see the Schedule page for a list.
Password Incorrect, Can't Log On
- 06/19/2002 Access Account password changes on https://www.work.psu.edu are not yet being synchronized with the win.psu.edu domain. Users can go to https://clc.its.psu.edu and pick "Change Your Password" to change all passwords (uses www.work.psu.edu) or "Reset Your Password" to set the win.psu.edu domain password equal to the Access Account password.
IE Favorites Moved
- 06/18/2002 If you have the Udrive set as your home folder, Favorites is redirected to V:\Favorites; Windows 2000 machines use ..\Profile\Favorites. We intended to have UserSetup use ..\Profile\Favorites if it existed, and then move the files after all labs were converted, but that code is not working. Since about half of the labs are XP at this time, UserSetup will be changed to copy any Favorites from the old location to the new location. Meanwhile, users can copy all the files in V:\Profile\Favorites to V:\Favorites manually.
Willard 2 Plotter
- 06/12/2002 Drivers for the plotter in Willard 2 are not yet available
- 06/19/2002 Problem with plotter being set as the default printer needs to be fixed before making change to Willard 2 machines.
- 06/26/2002 Driver problems resolved, set to deploy in Willard 2
Netscape Mail, News, Profiles
- 06/03/2002 Netscape 6.2 not working right. Users should find and use the Netscape 6.22 shortcut. The 6.2 shortcut is to be removed.
Reset Profile Web Page
- 05/01/2002 Need end-user web page to delete a user profile so all settings return to default.
- 05/10/2002 To be developed when we get time.
Password Changed, Can't Save Profile
- 06/22/2002 If you change your password as described below, while logged onto an XP lab machine, your profile can't be saved when you log off. Until we find a solution, users wishing to change their password on an XP lab machine should (1) do it immediately after logging, (2) immediately log off so there are no profile changes to be saved, and (3) log on with the new password.
- 07/11/2002 Change Password program deployed; users should use this to change their Access Account password when logged on a lab XP machine.
Software Not Being Installed (Systems Not Rebooting)
- 06/12/2002 Some machines are rebooting at night and therefore aren't getting new software packages installed. UpdtServ needs a better way to determine if someone is logged on; the problem with user registry settings not being completely unloaded causes it to think someone is always logged on, so it won't reboot.
- 06/13/2002 UpdtServ changed to use DefaultUserid set by Winlogon to determine if someone is on or off, but PSUGinaEvents needs to clear that on logoff.
- 06/14/2002 Change made to PSUGinaEvents; to be deployed.
- 06/26/2002 New UpdtServ ready to be deployed.
- 06/27/2002 New UpdtServ deployed.
Windows Installer
- 05/01/2002 Have seen cases where computer has to be restarted a second time to install application. The error: "The group policy framework should call the extension in the synchronous foreground policy refresh."
- 05/10/2002 Microsoft needs to be contacted.
- 06/05/2002 UpdtServ change to run gpupdate prior to nightly reboot; seems to help.
Printing
- 06/03/2002 Printing may not be working everywhere.
Local Disk Permissions
- 06/03/2002 Users can create folders on C:\ and put files in them.
- 06/04/2002 Looks like an MSI changed permissions; reset permissions via UpdateMe; will check to see if they are changed again.
Home Folder Incorrect
- 05/29/2002 If the user's profile is in a folder with .win or .win001 (or similar) appended (because an old copy exists), and "profile" has been selected as the Home Folder location, environment variables are not set correctly.
- 06/03/2002 UserSetup.exe changed to use the %USERPROFILE% env var when setting the Home Directory location. To be tested and deployed.
- 06/05/2002 Should be deployed, version 1.0.36.
PASS Space is not Mapped
- 05/20/2002 After connecting to the PASS file system, in any subsequent logons you can not connect to the the file system.
- 05/20/2002 A reboot corrects the problem, we are investigate the cause.
- 05/23/2002 Problem found (addprinters.bat) and will be corrected next week.
- 05/30/2002 Corrected; removed CSRIPT call from logoff.bat. One reboot might be necessary for the change to take place.
Cached Profiles Remain on Computer
- 05/10/2002 Cached Profiles, which should be removed at logoff, sometimes remain on computer (unaccessible by others, however).
- 05/10/2002 Investigate the cause -- probably a registry key being held open by some application.
- 05/10/2002 In the meantime, UpdtServ will erase those profiles older than 1 day.
Eudora Path Contains Blanks
- 04/24/2002 Eudora environment variable contains blanks after initial setup.
- 05/09/2002 Fixed in RestartShell.cmd launched by UserSetup; change to be deployed.
- 05/13/2002 New msi built with VSI installs but doesn't update files. Package rebuilt with WPS works. Change deployed.
