How to Use VNC in the PSU Mac Labs
Below are the steps to share the screen of the Mac in Wartik 108 to a Hershey campus computer (Mac or PC), as well as connecting to a Hershey computer.
We have documentation on how to do all of this manually instead, if you prefer. The steps below are much easier and quicker to do, though, and are recommended.
- On the Technology Macintosh in Wartik 108 Mac:
- Log on using your Penn State Access ID and password.
- On the desktop, look for this icon (which ONLY appears on the Wartik 108 Tech Podium Mac!):
- There are two options. The default, Share My Screen, is to configure the Wartik 108 Tech Pod Mac's screen to be shared with the Hershey computer.
The other option: View Hershey Screen is to connect to the Hershey Mac's screen.
Share My Screen steps:
- To Share the screen of the Wartik 108 Tech Pod Macintosh, click the Share My Screen button, as pictured below:
- Click the OK button to acknowledge that you're about to allow other computers to view the screen of this Mac:
- Next the connection information for the Hershey computer to connect to the Wartik 108 Mac will be displayed. In the picture below, the IP address (< Wartik IP Adddress >) is NOT displayed for security reasons. You'll need to tell the people in Hershey this IP address (looks like 123.123.123.123) and the Display/Port number:
- Click the OK button and tell the Hershey people to connect to this Macintosh via their VNC client software (ie, Chicken of the VNC).
- To Share the screen of the Wartik 108 Tech Pod Macintosh, click the Share My Screen button, as pictured below:
View Hershey Screen steps:
- The view the screen of the Hershey computer (Mac or PC), click the View Hershey Screen button, as indicated below by the green arrow:
- Chicken of the VNC will launch, and the VNC Login window will appear. Where < Hershey IP Address > appears below, enter in the IP address of the Hershey computer (Mac or PC) that is running the VNC Server. Make sure that the Display/Port number matches what the Hershey VNC server is set to (1 in this case). Finally, click the Connect button:
- A window should appear displaying the screen of the Hershey computer.
Feel free to call any of us for help during a class time emergency. Call the Hotline at 777-0035 and ask to speak with one of the Macintosh system administrators.
Please report any problems with these programs to us immediately. The best way to do that is to send email to us.
