ITS Linux Computing

FAQ's and answers

Q:  Can I access the cluster from a windows or Macintosh PC?

A:  Yes you can.  It requires other free software to be able to use graphical applications.  We explain how to do this in the Documentation Page.

Q:  Can I access my U-Drive from the ITS Linux Labs or the ITS Cluster?

A:  Not currently.  We are working on a solution to this.

Q:  Can I access the Linux Machines remotely?

A:  Remote access to the ITS Linux machines in the lab is not allowed, however we have a cluster of machines that we allow remote access to.  It has the same software available on it as the lab machines and even a few additional applications.  Directions to access the cluster are here.

Q:  Will Linux be deployed in any labs other than Hammond so we can have access to them 24 hours?

A:  We have two machines in Pollock 201, which is open 24 hours.  We are looking into deploying more machines in other labs in the future.  You will be able to check the status on our main page in the current events table, and also on the hours and locations page.

Q:  Are there any C/C++ compilers on the Linux machines?

A:  We have both the gcc and Intel C++ compilers on the Linux machines.

Q:  Why doesn't a page pop up when I print a document?

A:  This is a custom program that we are currently developing.

Q:  Who do I contact to learn more information about Linux here at Penn State, or for help with a problem?

A:  Visit us at http://clc.its.psu.edu/Labs/Help/ to find out where to get help, or email us at CLC-LINUX@PSU.EDU

Q:  Where can I find instructions for using some of the more common programs and utilities?

A:  You can find them on our documentation page.
