ITS Linux Computing

There are many programs on the Linux machines that perform the same functions as many windows programs.  Here is information for some of the more common programs and their functions.

Email:  Two email applications that are the most popular are Evolution and Thunderbird.  Ximian Evolution is very similar in appearance and functionality to Microsoft Outlook.  Thunderbird looks and works the same as it does on other Operating Systems.

Web Browsing:  There are many web browsers available on the web.  Of those, we chose Mozilla, Firefox, Opera, and Konqueror to install on our machines.

Office Suite:  The office suite we currently have on the Linux machines is OpenOffice.  This suite has programs that are similar to and compatible with programs in the Microsoft Office Suite.  They are listed in this table with the name of the Microsoft program and the OpenOffice counterpart.

Microsoft Word OpenOffice Writer
Microsoft PowerPoint OpenOffice Impress
Microsoft Excel OpenOffice Calc
Microsoft Project OpenOffice Project Management

Instant Messaging:  Gaim is the default instant messaging software that is compatible with Aim, ICQ, MSN, Yahoo, and IRC.

Media player:  Some of the more popular media players installed are Xine, XMMS, and Helix.  Others can be found under Sound & Video.

CD Burning:  K3B is a standard in cd burning on the linux platform.  This can also be found under the Sound & Video section of the menu.

File Transfer/FTP:  gFTP is a graphical ftp application.  From the command line you can use ftp or sftp (a secure ftp application).

Accessing the cluster: In order to access the cluster, you must have an SSH client.  SSH clients for windows and Linux/Unix are available from downloads.its.psu.edu if you are a student, faculty, or staff.  Once you have an SSH client, direct your client to connect to lxcluster.tlt.psu.edu and use your Penn State Userid and Password.  If you need more detailed information, please visit this page.
