Student Computer Labs
Introduction
The Student Computing Labs at University Park are available to faculty, staff, and students. The labs enable users to perform general computing tasks, such as word processing, email, and Internet surfing, as well as more advanced computing required for course work and research.
There are over 50 labs on campus, as well as over 1000 mobile computing ports that provide users with workstations and peripherals for Windows, Macintosh, and Unix platforms. The labs are equipped with printers and scanners, as well as more specialized hardware such as digital cameras and CD burners.
Each lab machine has a basic software configuration on the desktop, with a more comprehensive software grouping available in the workstation's programs list. To find out more about the labs, expand the Labs node on the folder tree to the left. You can also use the search box at the top right of this page to locate the information you need.
Cell Phone Use
You wouldn't share your password. Why would you share your cell phone conversation? As a result of feedback from fellow students, users of Penn State Student Computing Labs are asked to help preserve a quiet study atmosphere by observing basic cell phone courtesy appropriate to public places. Because the labs are intended as a quiet work space to help students complete assignments, we ask that conversations be kept brief and unobtrusive, or moved outside the lab. Muting of cell phone ring tones within Student Computing Labs is suggested as well.
Food And Drinks
A new University policy for Fall 2006 is that food and drinks, with the exception of bottled water, are not to be brought into classrooms. These include classrooms equiped with computers that are open to all students when not scheduled for classes. It does not include open student computer labs, but we ask that everyone make an effort to keep those areas clean as well.
