Windows 2000 and XP

Summary

Just map \\udrive.win.psu.edu\users as any letter, but click on "Connect using a different user name." in the Map Network Drive dialog box.  For "User name:", enter dce.psu.edu\xyz123 (where "xyz123" is your Access Account userid).

If you add win.psu.edu to the "Domain Suffix Search Order" in your DNS settings, you can map \\udrive\users.

Detailed Steps

Map U: Drive:

1. Open My Computer
   • Windows 2000: double click desktop icon
   • Windows XP: pick from Start menu
2. Select Map Network Drive from the Tools menu
3. Pick a drive letter (e.g., U:)
4. Enter \\udrive.win.psu.edu\users for the folder.
   • You may map just your own folder by entering the path like \\udrive.win.psu.edu\users\x\y\xyz123; that is useful if you do not need to find anyone else's folder.
   • You may map one letter to \\udrive\users and another to your own folder if you wish.
   • Note that you must use "back-slashes" (\), not "forward-slashes" (/), which don't work.
5. Check "Reconnect at logon" (if you wish).
6. Click on "Connect using a different user name."
7. Enter dce.psu.edu\xyz123 next to "User name:" (where "xyz123" is YOUR Access Account userid)
8. Enter your Access Account password.
9. Press OK, then OK again (or Finish on Windows XP).

Add Domain Suffix (Optional)

You can setup your computer so you don't have to add win.psu.edu to the server name.  Intuitive once you know how:

1. Open your Network Connections
   • Windows 2000: Start and Network and Dial-up Connections)
   • Windows XP (assuming "category view" setting for the control panel):
     • Start and Control Panel
     • Click on Network and Internet Connections
     • Click on Network Connections
2. Right-click the icon for the network connection in use (e.g., "Local Area Connection" or "Dialup Connection", or whatever you may have called it.
3. Pick Properties from the context menu.
4. Click on Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) -- just to select it; do NOT un-check it.
5. Click the Properties button.
6. Click the Advanced button.
7. Click the DNS tab.
8. Click the radio-button next to "Append these DNS suffixes (in order):"  (if not already selected).
9. Click the Add button to add a suffix.
10. Enter win.psu.edu and click the Add button.
11. You may wish to add other suffixes such as psu.edu.
12. Click on OK, then OK, then Close (or OK on Windows 2000).
13. Close the Network Connections window.

That's all.  You do not need to reboot or restart the network.
