Classroom Setup and Control
Limitations and Known Problems

Links: Home

Limitations

  1. The program is only available on the podium Windows computer.  It is realized that sometimes it would be useful to have a different computer control the classroom, but that presents somewhat of a security problem.

  2. Only Windows machines can be controlled.

  3. Using colors to represent computer status (e.g., not responding, no on one, someone on) may be a problem with color blind users.   Maybe some additional text or graphic symbols can be added to the labels.

  4. The message window cannot be seen by computers setup for eTesting, nor can those computers be "locked".

  5. The "session state" for web service times out after three hours.  If the log window shows an error like "Error sending command X.  Security exception: invalid session id", close the application and start it again.

  6. When a lab computer is rebooted, it won't know to send information about logons and logoffs to Classroom Setup; right-click the computer and click the Contact button.

Known Problems

  1. If computers are setup for eTesting, the Lock Screens command will cause them to "thrash" between the NoPeeking browser and the "lock-out" window . . . both fighting for control.  Classroom Setup will not allow the lock command to be sent to computers known to be setup for eTesting, but if it is launched after one or more computers are already setup, and an eTesting QUERY command has not been issued, it will allow the lock command to be sent.  You will need to send the unlock command.

  2. Slow to launch first time you use it in a session.  Better since we configured the virus scanner to not scan all assigned files, but it is still a bit slow, probably because of the JIT (Just In Time) Compiler.  Looking for ways for the installer to insert a native image in the GAC (Global Assembly Cache).
