Introduction

The Classroom Setup program to provides a mechanism for lecturers to control Windows XP student machines in our teaching labs (classrooms with computers at each desk).  From the podium computer, the instructor may:

• see a map of the classroom showing who is logged on which computer (who is logged on where is updated automatically);
• "lock" all computers so students can't "play" while their attention is desired at the podium (logon and logoff still permitted);
• "unlock" all computer when he or she is ready for students to work on their computer;
• send a message to all computers;
• setup computers for "eTesting" by setting the "shell", and restore computers to normal operation;
• control a specific computer by sending commands to:
  • lock or unlock that computer
  • logoff the user
  • reboot the computer
  • send the user a message.

This program replaces the web-based Classroom Control system, Fall, 2004.  For those familiar with that, here is a overview of the differences.

Availability

The service is available in all CLC teaching labs via the podium Windows XP computer.

Getting Started

It is advisable to experiment with this system before using it in class.  You can log onto one or more student machines yourself, then log onto the podium Windows computer to try it.

Startup

• Check that all computers in the room are turned on.
• Log onto a podium Windows computer that has been designated control (those listed above).
• Start the Classroom Setup program
  • An icon should be on the desktop of the podium Windows XP machine, look for:
    
  • The program can also be launched from the Startup menu, Utilities, PSU Tools.
  • The first launch after you log on will take a few seconds; please wait.
     
• The program should be fairly easy to use without reading all the instructions here.  Note that:
  • Most controls have "tool tips"—place the mouse over a button or other control and wait a second for a pop-up text with some explanation what it does.
  • The tool tip for an individual computer will show the logged-on user's name.
  • Click an individual computer for a dialog window to open up to control that one computer.

Strategies

Some suggestions for use:

1. Before locking computers, explain to your students what you are doing and why, so they don't resent it (e.g., the computer and the Internet are very attractive and fun, so it is understandably difficult to pay attention to me, etc.)
